However, a legal restructuring is in progress to cede shareholding to Directors and employees. This transition will further strengthen the company’s operational sustainability and leadership stability.
Our Journey
We were incorporated on 22nd October 2015 a subsidiary 0wned 100% by the Registered Trustees of Community Energy Malawi. Recognizing the past challenges of donor funded minigrids handed over for community operation, plus the difficulty of attracting private investment into a highly nascent market aiming to serve a population with severely limited ability and willingness to pay for electricity, CEM decided to set up CEM Trading LTD.
It is a business model taking a social enterprise approach. Under this model, strong local knowledge and connections, plus a focus on community involvement and engagement, are blended with a for-profit enterprise approach that leverages international partnerships to access expertise and routes to finance (blends of grants and private investment).
Our first key assignment was taking over the operations of Sitolo 80kW Solar Minigrid. We have also taken over the operations of Nakatale and Kaname Minigrids as well as the recently acquired Chisi and MWansambe Solar Minigrids.
